What Happens When You Reduce Work to Nothing but a Pay Check?

In our zest for technology and the push for college education, we force the young people out. All that is left are skeletons of these cities. What happens to te conversation when you reduce work to nothing but this transactional deal between an employer and an employee? To me, and this goes to a labor management thing.
