Aquinas is quite strict about lying and thinks that even lies as jokes are bad. Some contemporary moral theologians think Aquinas is actually softer about lying than a gustinist. Many people today would argue that the Ephesus type of lie at least in certain circumstances might not be a lie at all in species and might not be sinful in any way so i think we are coming from a very different perspective to St Thomas.
