The Effects of Rumination on Trauma Survivors

Trauma related rumination refers to perseverative thinking about the trauma and its consequences. It can also be a part of post-traumatic stress disorder where events are gone over and over and over trying to filter through details of this trauma. For example someone who calls themselves a recovering alcoholic may be using that term not to ruminate about their alcoholism but to remind themselves that taking that first drink could lead to relapse.
