The author's reason for writing this book is to shake people out of their complaisance such that they take necessary actions now. Greer traces to the industrial revolution, what he calls our age of extravagance. Our collapse will have a single ultimate cause, the impossibility of infinite growth on a finite planet. All civilizations collapse the bigger they come, the harder they fall. And we have been so very, very big.
