The Mystery of the Milky Way's Escape Velocity
The escape velocity of the Milky Way is something like a little over a thousand, 1500, I think kilometers per second. That's how fast these stars are going. And what I mentioned a possible source of this is getting too close to the supermassive black hole. Our belief that this is the case comes from looking at the chemistry of a bunch of these systems. We know of over a thousand now thanks to a variety of different surveys.
