We figured this out probably 200 years ago and there's not just a huge body of theoretical work to indicate that free trade is a good idea. But we now have over a hundred years worth of empirical data all pointing that same direction. The more you engage in trade, the better off your quality of life is. This is amongst economists pretty much indisputable and yet politicians somehow get the message.
