In corinth, they hosted their own local version of the olympics known as the isthmian games. You could actually compete in poetry reading contest. Paul was talking to a group that understoo the value of competition and celebrated the thrill of victory. Some people wrongly say, if you're a christian, you shouldn't be competitive, you should just be loving.
