Buell was a slave owner. He wrote to Lincoln that military power should not be allowed to interfere with the relations of servitude, except for repressing disorder as in other cases. McClellan's quotes on the subject of slaves and slavery are now unquotable because they use the N word very prominently. But he generally assumed the manner of a schoolteacher with a particularly stupid pupil.
