Putin's Russia Is a Scarecrow for the Russians

There is little evidence that people will get organised in large numbers to protest the war or to rise up against Putin. The majority of Russians who do not feel themselves to be immediately affected by the war stay away from voicing negative opinions about it. Any flirting with democracy would also run the risk of undermining Putin's autocratic grip on the nation, which is in part what the war is anyway about. Ukraine has shown repeated signs of leaning towards Western-style politics.
