Hezekiah and Assyria
As many as 200,000 jews were exiled and forty six judaan settlements destroyed. So maybe hezekiah knew that the assyrians were far too powerful to resist. It would have been likely the only way to prevent jerusalem suffering the same fate as lakish. After senacherib's campaign in judah, hezekiah survived for another 15 years. And during this time, he apparently miraculously survived a boyl which was initially diagnosed as one that would cause hezekiah's death. Judah survived, but now only as a vassal state of assyria.
