BBSs themselves are really, they're quite limited. It's pretty easy to install your own BBS on Linux and then set up a proper file area for things that you do want to get access to. Because it's telnet, it's text just transferred in the open. So this doesn't have any LEDs on it or anything, but somebody's done a version of it where you can attach eight LEDs which will flicker away when you're transferring data.
