Gramsci was born in 1891 on Sardinia, a Mediterranean island off the Italian coast. He's of that remarkable generation of artists, intellectuals and writers we refer to as modernists. Most of them come of age at the time of World War I and the Russian Revolution of 1917. Gramsci wants to understand how the philosophy of praxis is the Renaissance and the Reformation combined for the modern world.
