The BBC hired the announcer A.K. Surur and the poet Aziz Rifat from the Egyptian state broadcasting service. The Amir safe fell Islam Hussein, the son of the king of Yemen, inaugurated the BBC's Arabic service in January 1938. There was not just news, there was music, a poetry competition, daily readings from the Quran.
