In 1955, the Unionist Party won just over 50% of the vote in Scotland. Malcolm Petrie explains how they tapped into a sense of individualism that was threatened by Westminster. And so there was a lot of anti-socialism in that appeal, which tied together Unionism and people who would be instinctively liberal supporters.
