Robert O'Dan and the Marabou
In 1856, Robert O'Dan performed in Algeria to quell a rebellion by the Marabou. The French thought if they brought in their own magicians and made an even more powerful showing, the Marabu would be discredited or at least humbled into complacence with European colonizers. In 1905, a paper in Algiers wrote that Algerians loved him because of his performance.
