The Idea of a Commercial Republic

A commercial republic is one in which people are entrepreneurial, and competition is everywhere. It's certainly very different from the type of economic systems that were very prevalent in continental Europe and south of the border. But then commerce was a source of strength for the republic. And so we're very conscious that an economically strong and powerful country would be very hard to take down in geopolitical terms.
