When a baby comes out of the womb, there is just this sort of blooming, buzzing confusion of experience. And then you now increasing ability to relate oneself to the world after having made thatiferet develops ove the course of development. It's not nearly as much a matter of choice rit it is like built into a very fabric of how you can perceive the world. There are various equilibria in that process of development that cause it to look somewhat stage-like.
