In the 1990s, HP had to cut back on employees' pay and work hours during a recession. After six months of low order rates, business picked up once again. Some people who worked for HP have since started their own companies with more than 40,000 workers. "We are pleased and proud that they once worked with us," says Hewlett-Packard chief executive John Chambers.
