'Cadman's Hymn'
Cadman was a shepherd at whitby, who would often join and be present at gatherings of monks when they would drink and sing. These songs were mainly in anglo saxon, in this germanic language that we can roughly call early english,. And they were pagan. They talked often about pagan gods and heroes. This apparently made cadman uncomfortable. He also reportedy was uncomfortable because he believed he couldn't sing. So he would always withdraw before the harp got to him, before was his turn. But one night after withdrawing and going on his own out to the barn, he had a vision, an angel came to him. And this angel gave him christian praise
