The Importance of Getting Out of the Way
In the 70s, there was a general feeling that Western civilization was running down. Now it seems as if there are two problems: One, the institutions that we think can be reformed have completely failed us and we don't see any way really to repopulate them in a way that makes them effective. And two, there is a general sense, I think, that all of the things that we see, the examples of civil disorder that we see from small to large will never get solved.
