System stimulates tissues in a much more complex and realistic way than the previous single directional stretchers. If this new set up leads to a big improvement in the tissues themselves, pierre hopes that it could be used to improve treatments for tears in rotato cuff tendons. Robotic body has other possible applications too. For example, improving rehabilitation exercises by looking at how the cells are being affected by particular exercise. Or it could also be used in translational research to screen through buy materials to ensure that are mechanically suitable for humans.

Recreating the movements that tendon cells experience as they develop in the human body is necessary for growing tissue for transplantation, but this has been difficult to achieve in a laboratory setting. Now, a team has developed a system that uses a robot shoulder to stretch and twist these cells, which they hope could be used to improve the quality of tissue grafts in the future.
