The mandatory pledge wasn't prohibiting any speech. Their parents and church were free to tell the children whatever they wanted, no violation of listener autonomy. Shiffrin has a view that if there's something morally wrong with government-compiled speech, it must be wrong because it violates a more basic autonomy.
