The indigenous people of the Caribbean were ravaged, but they did not entirely disappear. To this day, there are people in the Caribbean who can trace their indigenous ancestry back to a time before first contact. Despite the implementation of this horrifically exploited regime, Hispaniola still only yielded a fraction of the gold that many had expected given Columbus's account of the first voyage. In March of 1496, Columbus decided that it was time for him to return to Spain and defend his conduct.
