The western mediaeval intellectuals were children of the city, where cathedral schools took over from monasteries as centres of learning. Our firststup takes us to the pulsating streets of paris and chartres in the early twelfth century home to a group of bohemian intellectuals known as the golier. They praised intellectual freedom, sang songs about the joys of life and used alterigos to criticise authorities. Among paris growing band of students and masters we also find of the most important intellectuals in european history. I am, of course, thinking of pierre abelard, a ka, peter apellard.
