The Importance of Washington Returning His Commission
The war did not end at Yorktown. He traveled to Annapolis and he returned his commission in person. This has been depicted, perhaps most famously, in a painting of Washington returning his commission. In doing so, he demonstrated that he was subservient to Congress.
