The Romans have a reputation for being quite violent people. They are very okay with levels of everyday violence within the home and in public spaces, which would be kind of horrifying to live through. The way that they present themselves as being incredibly violent is actually the tip of the iceberg. There's just this kind of baseline level of very public, very deliberate killing,. which would be nightly news if something happened here.
