Datus and Arta Faranese's Expedition to Greece
In 490 BC, Darius initiated another campaign in Greece. An army was assembled at Sousa and marched to Solisia where a fleet of 600 trierims had gathered. Their task was clear, they were to burn Athens in a wretria to the ground,. They brought back all survivors as captives to the great king. Herodotus does not give the size of the Persian army but the poet Simonides said the force number 200,000. Plutarch and Pausanias gave 300,000, and Plato and Lisius asserted 500,000.
