The Importance of Endoscopy in the ICU

Sometimes we will ask for a rithromycin or another primatility agent like regland to be given 30 to 90 minutes before performing an upper endoscopy. The idea of this is that the motillin like properties can increase gastric emptine and you can actually clear the retained blood or clots in the stomach. This is especially important in some cases I've seen this in patients who are in the ICU with COVID and have a hemorrhagic astritis. And then just remember again, if you're going in sooner and seeing higher risk bleeding that requires therapy, those patients need to stay in the hospital for 72 hours based on current evidence.
