Plastics became an important part of the war effort. Teflon in particular, was used to coat valves and seals for very volatile gases that were employed by Manhattan project scientists. Would there be an atom bomb without Teflon or plastics? Maybe they would have gotten there, but it would have been a much more dangerous than Adam bomb.
