A lot of these guys like are reverend here toad the line on that, that it was right for the enslaved to have access to the word of God. In some ways, he was actually playing along with the ideology of the Southern gentleman who believed themselves to be holding like a biblical patriarchy. Arguments were made that things like slavery kept people out of poor houses and reduced the need to tax because it would fall in the masters to take care of the destitute. This is basically like Pete Buttigieg 150 years ago. It's messed up. I don't really like liberals today, but I think I hated them more from the 19th century.
