There is some truth to the fact that why Christmas happens in midwinter. The Romans have their big holiday of Saturnalia. There is also the generalized Germanic idea of Yule which is a you know quote unquote pagan tradition or Calins. All of these are about feasting, drinking and hanging out with your friends. Just having a very very nice time in what would otherwise be physically a dark year.
