The History of Gift and Give in Old English
Gift and give can both be traced back to a common ind european root word. In old english, the meaning of that word had become very restricted. The anglo saxons didn't really use the term as a general term for a present. That's part of the reason why we know that the modern word gift was borrowed from the vikings.
