CHAPTER

Bentham's Penopticon

In 17 94, bentham had parliament authorize the building of his penoptican prison. The idea was it would keep prisoners safe, clean and free from disease. They would also learn to labour so they could be reformed after release. Part of its profits would go towards upkeep but part for them as old age pensions. It can be seen as a practical application of bentham's guiding principle - something he called the utility principle.
