Sigmund Freud's nephew, Edward Bernays, helped Eisenhower institute what would be the future of America. He said that in order to be on a war footing for the Cold War, we need to have our industrial capacity at tip top shape. And if they are consumers, then we'll be able to keep this war system going. The point was to have domestic manufacturing in case we needed to fight again. This was Bernays and all of his brilliance at the time.
