I don't see Rousseau as someone who's really looking for economic or technological development. Compared to a lot of the theorists of his time, not very keen on commerce or luxury. But when you take this part about inequality into it, the demand for quality is not at all old-fashioned. And makes him an inspirational figure for a lot of different radical movements in the future.
