How Sleep Improves Memory
The hippocampus is a seahorse-shaped nugget of neurons deep in the brain. We think that what happens during sleep or specific periods of sleep is that memory is transferred to the outer area of the brain, the cortex. Dara: So if you sleep, you'll remember things better. It prevents interference of new memories as well and just generalization as well.
