No one supposes that secret miter dovetails are any more durable than lapped ones. But when you're doing workmanship of certainty, when you have machines set up or it's heavily jigged, it is just easier to do to work to high regulation. You can't really veer off the fence when you're riding the fence. With workmanship of risk, it is not that way. It is completely dependent on, or very much dependent on your hand skill to guide that.
