felix mendelssohn was only 20 years old when he went on a long journey to scotland with his friend karl clingeman. He found the inspiration for two of his best loved pieces, the hebrides overture and the scottish symphony. There is a huge debate over how inspired mendelsohn actually was by scotland for the symphony. But this symphony, whether it's about scotland or not, is a masterpiece of the highest order.
