Is the Sea a Good Omen?

In european seafaring traditions, for hundreds of years, priests have been considered bad luck on the sea. Many who hold them o devout christians probably run back to that transition period when paganism was slowly giving way to christianity. And many people, especially those who led a dangerous life, had a foot in both camps - acknowledging christ on shore, but taking care not to offend the old gods at sea.
