purple comes from murex snails, which have something going on around their horses that creates this color. The ancient greeks tightly controlled who could and couldn't wear this color Purple. And the romans adopted a lot of their society and customs from the greeks. So blue is exclusive because it's literally exclosive - to have blue is literally exclives status. But purple was valued as the color of royalty.
