There are a couple more moments in this movement than i want to point out. We could easily imagine this as an epic poem about a lonely shepherd in bohemia who has lost one of his sheep and is lamenting his lot in life. Or something else. As leonard bernstein says, music doesn't mean anything. It's just music. And then it's revealed to us by devorge that this piece is not only a heavily traditional symphony, it's practically through composed with the same themes in every movement from its very first notes.
