The Transition to a Civil Society

The Iliad and the Odyssey were probably told for many centuries prior to the eighth century. They didn't owe their existence to any political or religious authority. And so they could evolve as as people's interests and concerns changed. The tragedies hundreds of years later, reinterpreted some of these same stories. So what we're kind of seeing is this this evolving process. It's not just about changing the institutions, it's about changing people's attitudes and values.
