The bigger the volume inside, the greater the capacity to produce something for secretion or to deal with something that's being absorbed. If it's squamous, then you can't create a concentration gradient. It's not necessarily going to be doing a lot of producing mucus or fluids because it's not big enough. And that's where the column now come in. So the column is going to be able to deal with things on the inside a little bit better. The reason for doing this is it's part of the innate immune system. Because we're breathing in the outside world effectively, we could be breathing in all sorts of toxic or problematic substances.
