The Theory of Programming Languages
In the end, my thesis was on context aware programming languages. The idea was there's a lot of sort of talking in functional programming about effects and effects are what your program does to the world. My claim to fame is that the hack language by Facebook has things they call sometimes capabilities, sometimes co-effects which are inspired by this idea. So other people have actually figured out how to do something real with that. But you won't find any GPS sensors there aside from the introduction.
