I was 18 when I went to Santa's. In those days, it was a two-year course. Two and a half weeks later, I was commanding a platoon of 27 soldiers on the streets of Belfast. The intensity of what was going on in Belfast and Northern Ireland in the early 70s was huge. Luckily on that tour, everybody recovered and survived. But you grow up pretty quickly when I reflect now.
