In psychology, we think of it as a defense. However, they're not aware of it. One of the hallmarks of narcissism is lack of awareness. They have no insight, no self-awareness. This is how their personality has grown up over time, probably since childhood. But instead of just coming in and being like a peacock, they might be quiet, anxious, depressed, and needy.
