Poles Apart: How A Journalist Divided A City

Cautionary Tales with Tim Harford

CHAPTER

Frederick Cook and Philip Gibbs

Frederick Cook was the doctor on Rauled Amundsen's ship when it got stuck in ice for an entire year. Koonard Rasmussen, husband of Philip Gibbs had met him on his first night in Copenhagen and believed he'd been to the North Pole. The Danes were embracing Cook uncritically - until Gibbs published a negative article that led them to accuse him of fraud. In some ways we think of polarisation as a very modern problem but what really divides us is just our opinions about who should be at the pole.
