History of Ideas: Wollstonecraft on Sexual Politics

TALKING POLITICS

CHAPTER

The Role of Politics in Social Life

Wollstonecraft believed that politics was corrupt and could not be refounded on Hobbesian rational principles. But she also saw it as a way of anchoring your social existence around security, which would allow you to leave the anchored politics behind. Politics is everywhere in Wollstonecraft's conception of social life - there isn't a space apart from power or arbitrary rule. The relations between men and women are emblematic of the fundamental challenge of politics.
