The Impact of the GI Bill on Black Veterans

The GI Bill was perhaps the most important piece of legislation in our nation's history. It enabled a whole generation of white veterans to come back and enter the middle class. The way that legislation was written, it was largely authored by Southern Democratic politicians who were segregationists. And so they made sure that legislation was distributed not at the federal level but at the state and local level.
