"I learned to be very humble because when you're in a fairly decent sized boat, this was a 55-foot long cement-hulled cutter that had been sort of self-assembled by a guy in California," he says. "The skipper was a really cool guy. He was sort of a hippie, a very pragmatic, skilled hippie from Santa Cruz, California who knew how to fix anything and didn't panic ever."
